pvallado@waynesworld.ucsd.edu (Paolo Valladolid) --------------------------------------------------------------------------- FUGAWARI ORANGE STREET A KOR universe fanfic By FOS Project http://waynesworld.ucsd.edu/ICR/users/pvallado/fos/fos.html Introduction: Fugawari Orange Street is a new fanfic series set in the world of Kimagure Orange Road. Its origin was a simple message on the KOR mailing list, which somehow evolved into a discussion of what might have happened to the original characters. Specific comments about Kazuya, and the mention that he is probably around the age Kyousuke was during KOR, led to the proposal of creating a fanfic to follow him as he travels through Kouryou High School. FOS is set in the manga universe, and attempts to follow its specific details and timeline as closely as possible. However, details on characters other than KOR's Big Three are sketchy, and ten years have passed since we last saw these characters. If you disagree with the liberties we've taken, send us comments. For convenience's sake, send comments to the main authors, for this episode greg@email.unc.edu and pvallado@waynesworld.ucsd.edu. FOS will hopefully be released biweekly, in real time. However, the real world has this way of impeding such lofty plans. In any case, we hope you'll read this episode and all which eventually follow. As is the case with many fanfic series, {word} represents thoughts and [word] represents action within script dialog. Your Warmth And Sweet Scent..." Three weeks left in school. Two weeks left in Emi's campaign. Kazuya was determined to win Emi back from Yukio. For two weeks, he was the best campaign manager the world had ever seen. He worked harder than anyone on Emi's campaign, maybe even harder than Emi. He knew his work would be rewarded by a celebratory date after she inevitably won the Student Body President race. Nothing would stop the two of them. Nothing? "NANI?!?!?!?" Everyone in the classroom turned to face Shimada Emi, who glared at the school newspaper spread in front of her. Her gaze was specifically directed at a column written by the school newspaper's top sports writer. "Both Vice President Towa and Student Council President Shimada, despite their campaigning, are little different. Both are politicians, pure and simple. And this school has never had a good politician," she muttered, first softly, then with increasing volume. "For leadership, this school should look to a proven leader, someone who knows how to function in a team environment. Emi: [Loudly] "This school would be much... better... served by the election... of... MOTOMURA YUKIO??????" Emi's face was positively livid with rage as she stood up and turned to face a confused and sweating Yukio, who just moments before had been staring through the classroom windows in his usual bored reverie. Emi: Motomura-kun! I thought we were on the same team! Yukio: Uhh... ha ha ha... believe me, this is news to *me* too! [scratches the back of his head] Other than Emi, Kyouko, and Maiko, the other girls in the class gazed adoringly at Yukio. Pink-haired Girl: Oh, Motomura-sama... you'll have my vote! Blue-haired Girl: Yukio-sama, you can be the president of *my* Bo- Emi: How could you betray me like that... running against me for Student Body President?!?! Yukio: [still scratching head and laughing nervously] I swear, Shimada-san, it wasn't my idea to run against you... ha ha... I didn't even want to be Vice President, remember?. Emi continued her advance towards Yukio. Yuji-sensei: Please calm down, Shimada! Kazuya: {Hmph... lover's quarrel between Emi and Yukio....} He thought of that unhappy evening when he found Emi and Yukio holding each other close at the Abcb. Kazuya: {Still... she's so beautiful even when she's....} Maiko: [elbowing Kazuya and winking] Kazu-kun, I thought you swore off pranks when we graduated from junior high.... This new one of yours is brilliant! [giggles] Kazuya: E?...Chotto matte*, Mai-chan! I had nothing to do with this! *Wait a minute Maiko looked at him skeptically, leaning closer to him and putting her hand on his shoulder. She spoke more softly. Maiko: Come on, Kazu-kun. I've known you for too long. You really had nothing to do with this? Kazuya: {She has a nice scent... Why didn't I notice before... Chotto! What am I thinking?!? She's my best friend!} Hontou*, Mai-chan! *It's the truth Kyouko's attention switched from the current Shimada/Motomura confrontation to Maiko and Kazuya. The proximity of Maiko to Kazuya and the way Maiko was looking at Kazuya did not escape her notice. Kyouko: {Are they really just friends?} On a hunch, Kazuya quickly glanced at Kyouko. Her expression was hard to read as she was now facing the windows with her chin resting on one palm, apparently oblivious to the growing drama between Emi and Yukio. Emi had paused from yelling, her brow furrowed in thought. Emi: I believe you, Motomura-kun, now that I recall your distaste for politics. But who could have thought of creating your candidacy in the school newspaper? She paused some more before fury once more returned to her face. Emi: Of course! Who *else* would have thought it! She turned to face Kazuya. Kazuya: {Uh oh....} Emi: Kasuga-kun!!! I won't hire thugs this time! I'll wring your neck myself! Yuji-sensei: Shimada! She started advancing like one of the avenging Furies towards a sweating Kazuya, who looked for all the world like a deer caught in the headlights of an onrushing car. Yukio stood up and followed Emi. Yukio: Wait, Shimada-san! Emi stopped and glared at Yukio. He raised his hands as if to ward off her glare and stopped. Emi then turned and continued her advance on Kazuya but quickly found her way blocked by a resolute Maiko. Maiko: You'll have to go through *me* first! Emi: Fine, Asagiri-chan! Emi started making a pushing motion towards Maiko to shove her aside as Maiko adopted a fighting stance, but stopped in surprise as Kyouko suddenly materialized as if from thin air next to Maiko. Maiko: Don't make me hurt you, Shimada. He said he didn't do it, okay? Kyouko: [takes Emi's hand] I'm sure we can resolve this peacefully. Let's go back to our seats. Nee*, Shimada-san? *How about it Yukio: Kazuya is your campaign manager. He promised you his support! Emi's expression softened a bit as she looked at Maiko, Kyouko, and Yukio in turn. Emi: I don't know why you are all so loyal to such an irresponsible person. With a huff, she returned to her seat and sat down. She pulled out her trusty planner, opened it, and was about to write in it when she noticed Yuji-sensei standing in front of her. Yuji-sensei: Shimada... Emi's eyes widened when she realized what the sensei was holding in his hands. A bucket of water and a mop. Yuji-sensei: You created a disturbance. You know the penalty... A humiliated Emi snatched the mop and bucket from the sensei as she heard a smattering of barely suppressed laughter from the rest of the class. Her gaze fell on Maiko, who was openly grinning and making a waving motion with her fingers. At this, Emi's first impulse was to charge at Maiko but her logical side reasserted itself. Surprised to see what looked like genuine sympathy on Kazuya's face, she simply stared back at him. Yuji-sensei: Shimada. Awakened out of her brief reverie, Emi exited the classroom, mop and bucket in hand. COMMERCIAL BREAK Cologne, Ranma, Genma, Mousse, and Ryouga are all standing in a desolate, rocky area, staring at a fissure in the ground. The four cursed men are all chewing gum. Cologne: According to legend, once every 75 years, a geyser linked to the Spring of Drowned Man shoots from this very fissure. The four men all get disappointed looks on their face as their gum is no longer flavorful. Announcer: Some gums lose flavor fast. They look through pants pockets, robes, and backpacks for more gum. Meanwhile, a jet of water briefly shoots up. All four men look up just as the water jet is disappearing, horrified looks on their faces. Announcer: Too bad they weren't chewing Extra gum! Extra has extra flavor which lasts an extra, extra, extra long time. Cologne: Don't be so glum. It's only 75 years. Why, I've seen 75 year anniversaries 4 times! [She hands each a pack of Extra gum.] END COMMERCIAL BREAK The school day finally passed. After being forced by Emi to campaign all day, he was glad to get home. Still, Kazuya felt obligated to spend Friday night waiting in the school auditorium as the election results were tallied. "It wasn't easy, but I managed to patch things up with Shimada and get her to concentrate on her own campaign," Kazuya thought. "She worked very hard to convince voters during lunch, and forced everyone on her team to do the same. She kept insisting she was confident she was going to win, but I think she was losing it!" "NANI?!?!?!?!?!?!" The elections board had just posted the first preliminary results. Emi's scream led Kazuya to glance up at the board. Votes Reported: 341 Towa Akihiro: 151 Motomura Yukio: 98 Shimada Emi: 92 Emi: [Advancing menacingly] KASUGA-KUN, THIS IS ALL YOUR FAULT! Kazuya: [Retreating] Anou*... how? *Umm... For once, Emi did not have an answer. Kazuya: Daijoubu*, there are almost 1100 students! There's plenty of time for results to change! *It's alright For several tense hours, Emi paced, yelled, screamed, berated, fumed, and in general made her feelings known, all the while insisting she was in complete control of the situation to passing-by school reporters. At 9:30 PM, the near-official results were posted. One of the officials announced that one more class's votes needed to be retrieved from the school office. All but one of the officials hastily departed, already having seen what the chart said. Votes Reported: 1034 Towa Akihiro: 387 Motomura Yukio: 328 Shimada Emi: 319 Kazuya tried in vain to physically restrain Emi. Emi: WHAT IS THIS??? I WILL NOT ACCEPT THIS AT ALL!!! Vice President Towa's entourage, with their candidate's first-place ranking assured, hastily fled the now-red Emi. When one of the Elections Board officials returned with the last box of ballots, Emi, Kazuya, and Towa Akihiro were the only others left. The two remaining officials counted the votes and wrote up the final chart. Emi was ready to rush the stage as they put it on display. Votes Reported: 1076 Towa Akihiro: 399 Shimada Emi: 340 Motomura Yukio: 337 Emi grabbed Kazuya. "Kasuga-kun! Strategy meeting tomorrow for the runoff election." Kazuya just groaned. The next morning, Kazuya walked onto school grounds to find Emi waving a paper in Yukio's face. "Kasuga-kun, you're here. Come with me!" she yelled. Kazuya barely kept up with Emi as she walked towards the school television studio holding Yukio's arm, all but dragging him. Kazuya: {Yukio, you lucky backstabbing bastard! I bet you enjoy being dragged about by your girlfriend!} Emi burst into the studio, still dragging Yukio. Emi: I want to see Hayakawa now! Ah... there you are, Hayakawa.... Hayakawa, known around Kouryou High as the school television announcer, turned to face Emi, who by this time had adopted a more friendly facial expression. Hayakawa: Can I help you? Emi: (sweetly) Yes, you can. Motomura-kun has an announcement he would like to make on today's school news program. Hayakawa: I'm sorry, Shimada, we've already made up the program for today's broadca- Emi took his hand and gazed into his eyes in a way that was both petulant and seductive. She stroked his hand with a finger. Emi: Please, Hayakawa-san... for my sake... and the sake of Kouryou High.... Hayakawa: I... I mean... sure, Shimada, no problem! Shortly thereafter, Kazuya's class watched Hayakawa's familiar visage appear on the television screen. Hayakawa: Before we begin today's announcements, we have a special announcment from our basketball team captain, Motomura Yukio. Various girls in the class gasped and chattered as the TV camera switched from Hayakawa to Yukio. Yukio: Ohayou gozaimasu, minna-san.* I wish to make the following statement. *Good morning, everyone. Kazuya turned about to gauge everyone's reaction. Even the guys were glued to the TV screen. His gaze fell on Kyouko. Today her hair was braided to one side; a golden stream of braided hair flowed around the left side of her seemingly delicate neck down her front side slightly to the left. Kazuya: {Kawaii!*} *So cute! His heart started beating faster as he kept looking at her. She noticed his gaze and returned it with puzzled look just as Maiko elbowed him. Maiko: Kazu-kun! Yukio is about to start! Kyouko was relieved that Kazuya had turned away--just in time to miss the blush she knew was emerging on her face as she smiled softly. Kyouko: {She's keeping her... boyf... her friend... in line... of course} Onscreen, Yukio cleared his throat and glanced downwards. He began to speak as if he were reading something offscreen. Yukio: As you all know, The Koryou Herald recently created my candicacy for Student Body President. Yesterday, I was surprised as anyone to see my name mentioned as an ideal candidate for student body president. I was even more surprised to see the outpouring of support I received. Kazuya glanced around as he heard cheering from most of the female students erupt from around the classroom. Pink-Haired Girl: Motomura-saaan!!! Blue-Haired Girl: Yukio-samaaa!! Kyouko and Maiko merely continued watching the screen. Emi was positively glued to it, clutching her fists to her chest in anticipation. Emi: {He had better get it right!} Yukio: I thank everyone who voted for me, but I never wanted to be President. My duties with the basketball, baseball, and soccer teams take up too much of my time. Pink-Haired Girl: E? Blue-Haired Girl: What's going on? Yukio: However, because of popular demand, I'd like to serve in the Student Government. Shimada Emi has offered the position of Vice President to me in the event she wins this election and I wish to accept this post. He appeared to look a little bit more closely at what appeared to be off-camera notes. Yukio: {Ok, this is where I'm supposed to do this next thing... I hope I can remember those last two sentences in this speech.} Yukio looked up and gazed intently back at the camera. Yukio: Therefore, please lend your support to Shimada Emi in today's runoff election! [gestures dramatically with hands] Together we can commence positive change for Koryou High! [glances back at unseen notes] Eito...* Thank you. *Umm... Once again, cheers erupted around the classroom. Pink-Haired Girl: Yayyy! Motomura-san and Shimada! Blue-Haired Girl: Yukio-san and Shimada! Woooohooo!! Emi lowered her hands, sighing in relief. * * * That evening, Kazuya was washing dishes at Abcb when Master called him. Master: Kasuga-kun, there's a young lady who wants to see you. Go ahead, I'll finish up the dishes. Kazuya: Arigatoo, Master. {I wonder what the election results are. I had to leave right after school to come to work.} He found a girl about his age leaning on the counter, facing away from him. Judging by her attire and the bow in her immaculately styled coiffure, he guessed that it was Shimada Emi. Kazuya: Shimada-san? Emi: Kasuga-kun, I want to speak to you outside. She spoke in even, measured tones. She seemed almost too calm. Kazuya:{This doesn't sound good! Especially when she doesn't even want to look at me!} Still seeing only Emi's back, he followed her out the front door. They walked a little, but not far. When Emi suddenly stopped, they were still in front of Abcb. Her voice trembled as she spoke again. Emi: Kasuga-kun, after what happened in this election... Kazuya: {She sounds upset! She must have lost and is going to blame me!} Emi: I only have one thing to say to you! Kazuya:{Oh oh...Here it comes!} He flinched in anticipation of a slap or a verbal lashing at best as he closed his eyes and prepared for the worst. Emi: WE WON!!! Kazuya was stunned, first by Emi's cry of victory, then the sensations of a pleasant scent and a warm body pressing up against his. He opened his eyes to discover Emi now holding him in her arms and resting her head on his shoulder. Kazuya's surprise turned into delight, though it was far more likely he was more delighted being in the arms of a beautiful young woman than he was for her election victory. After what seemed like too short a period of bliss, despite Kazuya feeling his shoulder get wet, Emi raised her head from his shoulder and released him. Tears streamed down her cheeks. Emi: Gomen, nee? I'm acting like a little girl who just got a cute puppy. She pulled out a handkerchief and wiped the tears from her beautiful face. Kazuya: You worked hard, Shimada-san. You deserve to celebrate! Emi: Yes, I did work hard... and I do feel like celebrating! Let's go inside. As Kazuya held the door open for Emi, he noticed Master standing behind the counter. From the huge grin on Master's face, it was obvious to Kazuya that Master had witnessed everything. Kazuya: Master? Master: Ah... nothing [waves Kazuya away] Emi: Kasuga-kun, why don't you take a break and have coffee or whatever you want with me? It'll be my treat! Master: Let it be my treat, Shimada-kun! Order whatever you want... it's on the house! My congratulatory gift to you for winning the election! Emi: Arigatou gozaimasu*, Master! *Thank you [polite] Master: Kasuga-kun, you're free to go and celebrate with your friend. I'll close up the store by myself tonight. Kazuya: Thanks, Master! Minutes later, Emi and Kazuya sat down together at a table with their freshly-brewed cups of java. Emi: Actually, I have a better reward for you for your loyalty and hard work. Kazuya struggled to maintain his composure though the excitement was evident in his eyes. Kazuya: A... d-d-d-date? Emi: Better than that! Spend Golden Week with me at my family's vacation house in Sami Beach! Kazuya: {Golden Week with Emi... a whole week all alone with her... in such a romantic place...} He imagined himself using the Power to impress Emi with his Power-assisted surfing skills as she stood on the beach in a bikini. He imagined himself applying suntan lotion to her back. He imagined himself holding her in his arms as they watched the sun go down. He imagined what would follow that evening as blood started rushing up his nose. Emi: Of course, you're welcome to invite your friends. As Kazuya's daydream shattered, unbidden waves of resentment rushed into his heart. Kazuya: I won't have to invite Yukio. Emi: Why? He's your friend, nee*? *Isn't he? Kazuya: You already invited your boyfriend, didn't you? Emi nearly spit out the coffee in her cup as she laughed and put the cup down. Emi: Silly! I needed him to win the election! Didn't I tell you I needed someone big on looks and small on ideas? They fell into what seemed like a long silence as they drank from their cups. Emi, in particular, studied the expressions of confusion and relief battling for real estate on Kazuya's face with no small amusement. Emi: Kasuga-kun, you did well. [stands up] My parents are treating me out for a victory dinner in a couple of hours so I need to go home and get ready. She walked to the front door, opened it, and stopped in the doorway to flash one more smile at Kazuya. Emi: Meet me in front of my apartment building Monday at 6AM sharp, ok? Mata nee*! *See ya! Kazuya: Jaa*, Shimada-san! *See ya He gathered the now-empty coffee cups and brought them to the sink in the back of the store. Master: Just leave them there, Kasuga-kun. Go and enjoy Golden Week! Kazuya: You too, Master! Jaa! Kazuya reached the door just as Maiko was opening it. Kazuya: Konban wa*! You look like you saw a ghost or something, Mai-chan. *Good evening! Maiko: I ran into Shimada on the way here. I can't believe it... she was actually nice to me! Kazuya: Well, she's been in a good mood because of the election. Maiko: Sou da, nee...* *That's the case, isn't it... Kazuya: I got off work early. What do you want to do tonight? Maiko: I was hoping you'd have an idea.... Wait, I know! Let's go to Kyouko's! I promised to visit her anyways. Kazuya: [smiles] N!* *Uh-huh! They began to walk, chatting like the old friends they were. Meanwhile, at the Shimada residence.... Emi: Tadaima!* *I'm home! Emi found her father reading the paper at the dinner table. Emi: Otousan*, I've invited my friends for next week's trip. *Father Mr. Shimada: Glad to hear it! How many? Emi: Eito... let me see... {Kasuga-kun for sure...} [giggles] {and I already invited Motomura-kun... guess I should have told Kasuga-kun but knowing how jealous he was at that moment... [giggles some more] also already invited Moriyama... and Kasuga-kun is sure to bring "you-know-who"...} 4 friends! Meanwhile, a block away from Kyouko's house.... Kazuya: Say... are you doing anything for Golden Week? Maiko: Not really. Why? By this time, Kyouko's house had come into view. They could hear someone playing what sounded like Bach on a piano. The sound of the piano grew louder as they approached the house. Kazuya: I got invited by a friend to spend Golden Week at a house on Sami Beach. Why don't you come with me? Maiko: Beach house... with you... A soft smile formed on her lips as her eyes began to mist. She gazed into Kazuya's eyes in a way that made his pulse go a little faster. Looking at her, he sensed what she would do next. What scared him was that while part of him feared it, the other part welcomed it. Kazuya: A... Anou... Maiko: Oh, Kazu-kun! She ran to Kazuya and threw her arms around his neck excitedly. Just then, whoever was playing the piano hit a succession of dissonant notes, as if the performer had abandoned Bach and spontaneously began playing a passage from one of Arnold Schoenberg's atonal pieces. Then, the piano fell silent.
